The kick and the bass stop fighting.

GrooveEQ makes room for the kick only in the band where it hits the bass, and only while the hit lasts. The bass stays whole the rest of the time.

The usual answers cost something.

A fixed EQ cut stays there even when the kick is not playing, and the bass is thin the whole time. A sidechain compressor pulls the whole track down, the mids and the top go with it, and everyone hears the pumping.

GrooveEQ splits what it hears into six bands and watches each one on its own. When the kick collides with the bass, it lowers only the band in the way, only while it is. The kick gets the room, the bass keeps its body, and nobody hears the EQ working.

It also tells hit from sustain: two envelopes, one fast and one slow, and TRANSIENT and TONAL aim the work at one or the other.

Send on the kick, GrooveEQ on the bass, SC on.

A Live device only hears its own track, so the sidechain uses a companion, and both come in the package. The KICK/BASS preset, in the header, sets everything in one click, with the kick digging only between 30 and 300 Hz.

GrooveEQ Send on the kick track

Passes the audio untouched. Only sends a copy to the bus.

GrooveEQ on the bass track

SC on. On the left of the panel, the real six-band curve over the spectrum. On the right, the last three seconds: every bite of the kick and how much was taken. That is where you see whether it locks to the beat.

What you get, and what it does not do.

Six fixed bands, from 60 to 6000 Hz, each with its own detector. Sidechain with amount, sensitivity, maximum and range. Four presets. No FFT, no lookahead, zero latency. Every parameter is native to Live: automation, MIDI and Macros work out of the box. Two files, the README and the list of limitations.

  • The six bands do not move. That is what keeps latency at zero.
  • One kick/bass pair per project: two copies of GrooveEQ listen to the same Send.
  • The automatic band choice is coarse; between 60 and 950 Hz it lowers the bands that are not empty, not only the ones that truly collide. SC LO and SC HI are the manual path, and that is why they exist.

For the drums that go over that low end, PUNCH. For the ceiling at the end of the chain, CEILING.

What a great product, it's easy to use, intuitive, and makes coming up with chords, basslines, and melodies much faster. A really useful addition to my library.

Made by someone who also produces

I am Na7an.

I make Max for Live devices and I make my own records. Kick against bass is the oldest problem on my records. I rewrote GrooveEQ's sidechain detector twice until it let go between hits the right way, and everyone who had the previous version got this one for free.

Before you buy

Why two devices?

A Live device only hears its own track. So the sidechain uses a companion: GrooveEQ Send goes on the kick track and passes the audio untouched, it only sends a copy; GrooveEQ goes on the bass track, with SC on. Both come in the package. If you switch SC on and nothing happens, the Send is missing on the kick track, and the device says so in its header after two seconds.

Can I move the six bands?

No. They are fixed at 60, 150, 380, 950, 2400 and 6000 Hz. That is the trade that keeps latency at zero and CPU low: there is no FFT and no lookahead in the signal path.

How many kick/bass pairs per project?

One. It is one sidechain bus per Set: two copies of GrooveEQ listen to the same Send.

I already have version 1.1. What changes?

The update is free and saved projects open with the same values. With the sidechain off the sound is identical. With it on, the duck now lets go between hits: at the default 150 ms Release, on a four-on-the-floor kick at 120 BPM, the reduction still left before the next kick went from 77% to 21%. And there are SC LO and SC HI to say where the kick may dig.

Does it work in Live 10 and 11? Windows or Mac?

Yes, Ableton Live 10 or newer, Suite or with the Max for Live add-on, on both systems. Live Intro and Live Lite cannot run Max for Live devices. No internet, account or key. Instant download through Gumroad: the two devices, the README and the list of limitations.

The kick gets the room. The bass keeps its body.

Six bands, each with its own detector. A sidechain that makes room only where the two sources collide, and lets go between hits.
